What is a Carbon Ceramic Brake?

A high-performance braking system developed to handle heat and repeated braking

A Carbon Ceramic Brake is a braking system whose discs are made from a composite of carbon and ceramic, unlike conventional cast-iron discs. Its key strengths are maintaining performance at high temperatures, reducing the weight of rotating parts and lowering the car's Unsprung Mass

Thanks to these properties, Carbon Ceramic brakes are used on sports cars, supercars and performance cars from many brands such as Mercedes-AMG, BMW M, Porsche and Audi RS, along with Carbon Ceramic technology from brake makers like Brembo and Performance Brake systems from USUS. Porsche states that PCCB discs weigh about 50% less than comparable cast-iron discs, while BMW M highlights the fade resistance, low weight and corrosion resistance of its M Carbon Ceramic system.

Key Benefits of Carbon Ceramic BrakesA high-performance braking system developed to handle heat and repeated braking

High Thermal StabilityMaintains performance at high temperatures

Carbon Ceramic material is highly stable at high temperatures, making it well suited to hard or repeated braking that builds up heat. It helps reduce Brake Fade and keeps braking force more consistent. Brembo states that CCM deforms little at high temperatures and resists Brake Fade well, while AMG designs its Ceramic Performance system for high braking loads and track use.

Reduced Unsprung WeightLess weight at the wheels for sharper response

Carbon Ceramic discs can be much lighter than steel discs. Reducing Unsprung Mass lets the suspension and wheels respond to the road more quickly. Porsche states that PCCB discs weigh about 50% less than comparable cast-iron discs, and on some Audi RS 6/RS 7 models the RS Ceramic system cuts total weight by about 34 kg compared with the steel set.

Consistent Braking PerformanceConsistent braking force under heavy use

The system is developed to keep brake feel and performance consistent under high temperatures and loads — ideal for cars with powerful engines, heavy cars or Performance Driving

Flinstone Autoparts inspects and installs Carbon Ceramic Brake systems for European, luxury and high-performance cars, choosing brake kits and specs to match each model

We cover brake systems from performance car brands and leading brake manufacturers, including

  • Mercedes-AMG Ceramic High-Performance Composite Brake
  • BMW M Carbon Ceramic Brake
  • Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake — PCCB
  • Audi RS Ceramic Brake
  • Brembo Carbon Ceramic / CCM
  • USUS Carbon Ceramic Brake

Each system differs in design, disc size, number of caliper pistons and fitment details by model, so always check your car's specs before choosing and installing

How do Carbon Ceramic brakes differ from ordinary steel brakes?

Carbon Ceramic Brake

Carbon Ceramic Brakes are designed for use at high temperatures and under repeated braking. The discs are lighter than ordinary steel discs, reducing Unsprung Weight and making the suspension and steering more agile. They also withstand high heat, lowering the risk of Brake Fade and keeping braking consistent even under heavy use — ideal for high-performance cars, sports cars and Performance Driving

Steel Brake

Steel Brakes, or steel brake discs, are the common system on everyday cars. They provide braking performance suited to daily driving, work well in normal temperature ranges, are easy to maintain and replace, and cost less than Carbon Ceramic. However, steel discs are heavier and build up more heat under repeated hard braking, so they can suffer Brake Fade sooner under high loads and temperatures

So choosing a brake system doesn't mean Carbon Ceramic is “better in every case” — it depends on how you drive, your model, vehicle weight, engine power, driving style and budget. For everyday use, Steel Brakes still do the job well and are easy to maintain. But for high-performance cars, or drivers who want less weight at the wheels, more heat resistance and consistent braking under heavy use, Carbon Ceramic Brakes have a clear advantage

Mercedes-AMG Ceramic Brake

AMG Ceramic High-Performance Composite Braking System

The Mercedes-AMG Ceramic brake system is designed for high-performance cars and heat-intensive use. AMG focuses on consistent braking force, heat dissipation and reducing Unsprung Mass

For example, the AMG GT 63 PRO uses 420 mm front Ceramic discs with 6-Piston Fixed Calipers, while specs vary by model, so parts and fitment must be checked for your exact model before installation.

BMW M Carbon Ceramic Brake

Lightweight Performance for BMW M

The BMW M Carbon Ceramic Brake is developed for BMW M cars, focusing on Brake Fade resistance, low weight and corrosion resistance. A hallmark of many M Carbon Ceramic systems is the Matte Gold caliper with the M logo

BMW states that on the M3/M4 the Carbon Ceramic system cuts total brake weight across all four wheels by about 13 kg compared with the reference system, directly benefiting Unsprung Mass and agility.

Audi RS Ceramic Brake

Carbon Ceramic Performance for Audi RS

Many high-performance Audi RS models offer the RS Ceramic Brake to handle their higher power and weight

For example, the Audi RS 6 and RS 7 use a Ceramic system with front discs up to 440 mm and 370 mm rear discs. Audi states the system is about 34 kg lighter than the steel set, reducing Unsprung Mass and improving handling agility. Disc sizes and system layouts vary by Audi model.

Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake — PCCB

Porsche PCCB

Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake, or PCCB, is Porsche's name for its Ceramic Brake system. The technology first appeared on Porsche cars in the early 2000s and remains the brand's top-tier brake system today

Porsche states that PCCB discs use Ceramic Fibre-Reinforced Composite and weigh about 50% less than comparable cast-iron discs, reducing Unsprung Mass while delivering stable braking under high loads. PCCB is fitted as standard or as an option on many Porsche models, depending on model and market.

Brembo Carbon Ceramic Brake

Brembo CCM — Carbon Ceramic Material

Brembo is an Italian maker of high-performance brake systems with a long history in performance cars and motorsport, and developed CCM — Ceramic Composite Material technology for high-performance cars.

Brembo CCM discs use a Ceramic Core reinforced with Carbon Fiber, designed to be light, withstand high temperatures and keep friction characteristics stable under hard braking, reducing the risk of Brake Fade during repeated use.

USUS Carbon Ceramic brake with green caliper

USUS Carbon Ceramic Brake

Performance Brake Engineered for Custom Fitment

USUS brake systems come in Steel and Carbon Ceramic for performance upgrades. The Carbon Ceramic system is designed for Thermal Stability, lower Unsprung Weight and high-heat use

USUS specifies systems from 330–440 mm discs and Forged Monoblock Calipers from 4–10 Pistons, with Two-Piece Rotors and a choice of Steel or Ceramic to suit how the car is used and its fitment.

What sets USUS apart is that the system can be matched to the car, wheels and driving style rather than being limited to factory options
